FAQ

About Our Approach

1. What is the difference between functional and conventional medicine?

Conventional medicine is essential for acute crises and focuses on managing symptoms, often with medication. Functional medicine is a distinct approach that seeks to understand and address the complex, underlying root causes of chronic disease. It is the only methodology that uses a systems-biology framework to investigate how genetics, lifestyle, and environment interact to influence your long-term health.

2. What is the difference between functional, integrative, and holistic medicine?

While all three approaches focus on the whole person, functional medicine is unique in its primary goal of getting to the root cause of ailments. Integrative medicine focuses on combining conventional and complementary therapies, while holistic medicine emphasizes the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit.

Becoming a Patient

1. What does my first visit include?

Your initial consultation is a comprehensive deep-dive into your health. It includes a thorough pre-visit review of your medical history by Dr. Mahtani, a dedicated one-hour, one-on-one consultation, the creation of a personalized initial action plan (which may include advanced lab orders and dietary recommendations), and a comprehensive after-visit summary.

2. Who do you see for appointments?

We see patients who are 18 years of age and older.

3. Do you offer telemedicine and in-person visits?

Yes, we offer both in-person visits at our Charlotte, NC, office and telemedicine consultations for patients located in North Carolina and South Carolina.

4. Where do I get lab work done?

Dr. Mahtani will provide an order for most conventional blood work to be done at a Labcorp or Quest location convenient for you. For advanced specialty tests, a kit is typically mailed directly to your home for easy completion.

Practice Logistics & Policies

1. Do you take insurance and what are the fees?

SouthPark Functional Medicine is an out-of-network provider and does not bill insurance directly. This allows Dr. Mahtani to provide a level of in-depth, personalized care that is not possible within the constraints of the insurance model. Our fees are:

  • Initial Consultation (60 minutes): $599
  • Follow-up Consultation (30 minutes): $299

We are happy to provide you with a detailed superbill to submit to your insurance company for any out-of-network benefits you may have.

2. What does my consultation fee include beyond the face-to-face time with Dr. Mahtani?

Our comprehensive approach extends well beyond your scheduled appointment time. Your investment covers:

  • Pre-Visit Analysis: Before your initial visit, Dr. Mahtani personally reviews your complete medical history, ensuring your consultation is efficient and deeply focused.
  • After-Visit Summary & Plan: You’ll receive a detailed electronic summary of your discussion and your personalized treatment plan.
  • Ongoing Review: Dr. Mahtani thoroughly analyzes all test results between visits to continuously refine your path to wellness.

3. How do I book an appointment?

To begin the process, please visit our website and click on “Request a Consultation.” Our team will then guide you through the next steps.

4. What is the best way to reach Dr. Mahtani between visits?

For established patients, the best way to communicate is through our secure, HIPAA-compliant patient portal. This portal is for brief, clarifying questions about your current treatment plan. For any new symptoms or complex questions that require clinical review, a scheduled “Brief Clinical Follow-Up” visit is required to ensure your concerns are addressed properly.

5. What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

Our appointment times are reserved exclusively for you. To ensure we can accommodate all our patients, we require at least three business days’ notice for any cancellations or rescheduling. A $100 fee will be applied for cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice.
